- If possible, could somebody please create SVG files for the three sledge flags used by Captain Scott throughout both the Discovery Expedition (1901–1904) and Terra Nova Expedition (1910–1913) in Antarctica, including:
1) His sledge flag during the Discovery Expedition, based on this PNG version here.
2) His primary sledge flag during the Terra Nova Expedition, as seen here (very similar to the Discovery version, but still with many noticeable differences).
3) His second sledge flag during the Terra Nova Expedition, as seen and described (if you click on the picture's caption) here.

- @Hstoops: Brilliant work, thank you very much! Just a few minor things before I close this request; I believe the red motto on the "Discovery" sledge flag should have a full stop at the end. Also, regarding the second sledge flag from the "Terra Nova" expedition, I believe there should be a single blue quotation mark (') on either side of the motto, and that the "w" in "wings" should actually be a small letter, not a capital one. Any chance those could be remedied? Sorry for the hassle, and thanks again for your help. Snow Lion Fenian (talk) 12:42, 15 August 2025 (UTC)

Request for Vectorization of Historic Coat of Arms: House of Esparza
[edit]-
Coat of arms of Lope Ruiz de Esparza
Article(s): en:Lope Ruiz de Esparza
- Request
I would like to request a high-quality SVG vectorization of the historic coat of arms of the House of Esparza, based on heraldic records from Spanish nobility registries.
The current depiction on Commons (if it exists) is either outdated, low-resolution, or lacking heraldic detail. I have provided the original arms description for the blazon below.
Blazon (heraldic description): Or, a wolf statant sable at the foot of an oak tree vert.
- Field (Escutcheon Background):
- Tincture: Or (gold).
- Rendered in a rich, traditional heraldic gold. It should have texture and depth
- Charge 1 – The Wolf:
- Attitude: Statant (standing on all four legs, facing dexter [heraldic right]).
- Tincture: Sable (black).
- The wolf should be stylized but naturalistic
- Charge 2 – The Oak Tree:
- Position: Centered above the wolf, rooted to the ground line.
- Tincture: Vert (green).
- Trunk may be in brown (proper), unless a purer heraldic green is preferred.
- The tree must be recognizably an oak: sturdy trunk, wide canopy, and visible roots or base flare.
- Ground or Support (if included):
- A thin base line (compartment) in natural earth tones may be added to ground the wolf and the oak if the style allows. Otherwise, the charges may float within the field, as is traditional in Iberian arms.
Style Requested: Please follow the style typically used in the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Spain, or the standard heraldic style used in official Spanish armorials.
This redesign is for encyclopedic and historical purposes, and I hope it may benefit Wikipedia articles on related noble families or municipalities. --Euhistoryprofessor (talk) 14:01, 21 June 2025 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- I've made an attempt at implementing your request. I'm happy to tweak the colors or use different renderings of the charges if you have suggestions. I decided to make the trunk green for better contrast with the wolf and to more clearly match the blazon and Escudo de Ruiz de Esparza.png, at least for my first draft. I'm not sure what you think of as a 'rich, traditional heraldic gold' – does a warm yellow do the trick, or do you need a metallic gradient? —Ilzolende (talk) 21:30, 28 June 2025 (UTC)

- Graphist opinion(s)
- This should not be done. The red and gold version is the correct banner of Cambridgeshire County Council (and is flown as a flag at its headquarters). That area covers two historic counties - Cambridgeshire and Huntingdonshire, and the ceremonial county ropes in Peterborough too). The two counties have their own flags, designated specifically as for the historic counties.
- If the barnstar is intended to indicate work in connection with the local government area or the ceremonial county, the red and gold version is correct. The blue and gold flag would be appropriate for a connection to the historic county: see its entry on the UK Flags Register. Hogweard (talk) 06:38, 23 July 2025 (UTC)

- For five years now, the names of the lower canines and laterals in File:Permanent teeth names.png have been reversed. Which is unfortunate, because it and File:Deciduous teeth names.png would make such a great pair if both were correct. It should be a relatively trivial matter to switch them, but no one has done so. (I could try, but I have no particular expertise in image editing, so it would take a while and probably not give great results.) Note that this really should be an SVG, but the author no longer has the original file (see the talk page), so we are stuck with this PNG. I believe it's better to have a correct PNG than an incorrect anything, so could someone please upload a corrected version where the labels "Mandibular Right Canine" and "Mandibular Right Lateral Incisor" are switched, and the labels "Mandibular Left Canine" and "Mandibular Left Lateral Incisor" are also switched? I don't know what the policy is about keeping vs. changing filenames on images when they change substantively like this. FWIW, the image is not in use on any Wikimedia project, presumably because of the labeling error, and probably is not in use on very many other wikis (i.e., through InstantCommons) for the same reason, so maybe it doesn't matter if we just upload the new, correct image over the old? - dcljr (talk) 09:34, 21 August 2025 (UTC)
- Graphist opinion(s)
- If it's not in use, I'd suggest redrawing it, perhaps using File:Illu_mouth.svg as a base. The current text is too small in the thumbnail and is at awkward angles. If someone can find an equivalent SVG for deciduous teeth, I'll be happy to remake them. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 03:04, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- P.S. Alternatively, I could crop out the non-text parts of the PNGs and embed them in an SVG. Not ideal, but at least we have the existing graphic but with editable text. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 03:09, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee: I have vectorized the raster image of the deciduous dentition as a multilingual graphic (DE + EN).

- Great, thanks. Would you mind if I shift the text down slightly so that they are horizontally aligned with the leader lines (instead of the leader line being under each label)? cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 15:16, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee and Dcljr: please keep layout at it is, thx
Done
- Thanks! But there's an awful lot of blank space on the sides of both of the new images. Could that be reduced, please? - dcljr (talk) 17:01, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- Oh, wait. That's because of the multiple languages, right? The current German text is longer than the English. - dcljr (talk) 17:19, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee and Dcljr: correct, layout is optimized for multilingual translations, please keep it as it is, thx
- it would be possible to use linebrakes, but then the image would be very high --Mrmw (talk) 17:32, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee and Dcljr: i also did another vectorisation for comparision both of teeth - its from de-wiki - perhaps somebody is interested in --Mrmw (talk) 20:29, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- Ok, I'll leave you and other editors to update it as you see fit. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 21:21, 22 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee and Glrx: @Glrx How do you evaluate this?
- My perspective:
- Multilingual SVGs offer many advantages and benefits.
- However, they require a special layout, especially for the text portions, where space must be reserved for potentially longer translations.
- As a result, this sometimes leads to larger white spaces at the edges.
- For me, this is acceptable to a certain extent—if such a graphic is, for example, reused privately, the user can later crop the rendered raster image in their language as needed. --Mrmw (talk) 05:23, 23 August 2025 (UTC)

- The switch tag allows total control of the elements to be swapped in and out, not just the text content, so different languages can have different font sizes, multiple lines etc.
- However, the SVG Translate Tool allows only text content to be changed.
- If either the tool can be changed (advanced mode?) or the SVG tagged for only manual updates, we can have just the right amount of whitespace.
- Alternatively, does anyone know whether SVG can automatically scale text to fit a given area like in MS PowerPoint? I don't think it's possible, but who knows!
- Cheers, cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 06:56, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, multilingual SVG has both benefits and problems.
- I'm happy with the permanent teeth image. I would have made the mouth and teeth bigger, but that is my preference.
- Translations are problematic and do need extra space. Spanish typically needs about 30 percent more space than English. Commercial translations of English instruction manuals to Spanish often trim some of the text so it will fit the space. Chinese is much more compact.
- The intent of switch translations on Commons is to enable easy translation for images that would be used on many wikis. That means extra space is needed. The value of the translations is often worth the cost of the wasted space.
- If the extra space on the image is an issue, just make a separate file. Hacking the multilingual SVG may make that SVG more confusing.
- The typical situation is graphic artists draw the original image, and then translators add or modify the text. The graphic artists are not expected to know a lot of languages, and the translators are not skilled graphic artists — they only modify the text. Mrmw's permanent teeth image could easily be used on dozens of wikis and desire dozens of translations. Many of those wanting to add translations will not have graphic or XML skills. A Chinese high school student would probably prefer to see Chinese text rather than some Latin or Cyrillic script.
- SVG has never had good typesetting capabilities (and I'm ignoring the textbox issue). Typical editors will typeset spaces beyond the margin, but SVG does not. SVG graphics state does not compose (e.g., ex2). Symbols with both subscripts and superscripts are problematic. SVG is really an output format rather than an exchange format.
- Although switch elements may have arbitrary content, such files are difficult to maintain. SVG Translate requires that switch elements contain only text elements with an equal number of tspan elements. That is not ideal, but it covers many situations.
- In addition, most graphic editors cannot edit SVG with switch elements. Inkscape can, but it requires specialized knowledge of what is going on behind the scenes. Ordinary Inkscape users may accidently add graphic elements inside of switch elements rather than outside. I doubt Corel Draw and Illustrator will maintain switch translations.
- The WMF multilingual approach has issues. A better solution would allow any graphics editor to improve the images without losing the translations.
- I've done font switches with classes, lang, and CSS.
- Everything has weaknesses.
- Glrx (talk) 15:58, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
- Good points, Glrx, especially re SVG editors (software).
- It seems there's no way to automatically scale text without JavaScript – see http://codepen.io/scottcarver/pen/yYyxyZ but I've a workaround which might be overkill:
- Each label has several tspans in different font sizes at the same location. The editor fills in the one most appropriate for their language and leaves the others blank. Thus only the one correctly sized shows.
- To support English, Spanish (if it's agreed to be the most verbose language) and Chinese (if most compact), perhaps three sizes should do? cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 22:01, 23 August 2025 (UTC)
- @Cmglee: Did I understand that correctly: different font sizes in one file just because of the different text lengths in the different languages? So Spanish would always tend to get a smaller, less legible font size? That doesn’t seem reasonable to me. --Mrmw (talk) 04:11, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- While inefficient storage-wise, I don't think it's unreasonable. A smaller font is preferable to truncation or overlapping other elements.
- Conversely, if one planned for, say, Spanish to be legibly sized, English and Chinese can be larger and be even more legible.
- Regardless, I was trying to brainstorm solutions which let translators edit only textual content and are supported by SVG without JavaScript. cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 07:22, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- I'm OK with brainstorming, but I'm also a big fan of simplicity. Many knowledgeable SVG contributors have come up with translation schemes that work for them but end up surprising or confusing rank and file SVG contributors. Multiple tspan elements would probably confuse rank and file contributors. Leaving extra space may annoy some users' esthetics, but it will not confuse them.
- For a multilingual SVG file that has Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, I may add some obscure CSS that selects different fonts for select langtags. I know that can confuse some contributors, but most of the time it will do the right thing. IIRC, I've also made Chinese characters larger than Latin characters with CSS. Such a change follows the notion that the SVG should contain the content while CSS controls the presentation. I've also done CSS hacks to make right-to-left languages such as Arabic work correctly. I'm aware that all those edits are tricks that may be difficult to follow.
- Glrx (talk) 20:08, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- Sounds good. Does the SVG translate tool maintain the tspan's class? How can a translator who adds a new language select the appropriate class? cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 20:26, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- The CSS does not use class selectors but rather attribute selectors.
text[systemLanguage="zh" i] {font-family: ...;} text[systemLanguage="ko" i] {font-family: ...;} text[systemLanguage="ja" i] {font-family: ...;}
- Adding a new language that uses a special font requires editing the style element once.
- The SVG designers should NEVER have used comma-separated values in the systemLanguage attribute. There's no comma-separated list processor for CSS, but SVG Translate only puts one langtag in a systemLanguage attribute.
- The approach has limitations because most CSS does not detect inherited attributes (lang is an exception).
- Glrx (talk) 22:28, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- That's brilliant. It works well!
I'll try that in the future.cmɢʟee ⋅τaʟκ 09:50, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
