Categorization and coordinates
[edit]Hi 4300streetcar, I appreciate the Boston transit images you've been uploading. I do have two requests:
- Please use only the most specific categories available. Categories on Commons are hierarchical, so broader categories should not be added. For example, I moved File:Beacon Park Yard December 2023.jpg from Category:Rail yards in Massachusetts to the more specific Category:Beacon Park Yard, and from Category:Boston to the more specific Category:December 2023 in Boston and Category:Boston skyline in the 2020s. I recommend enabling HotCat which makes it easier to find the proper categories. If you look through your uploads, you'll see that I've corrected the categories on most of them.
- If possible, please use more exact coordinates. You've been adding three decimal digits, which is only precise to about 300 feet. In an area like Boston, this can result in the coordinates appearing to be on the wrong street. I recommend 5 digits of precision, which is pretty easier to obtain with mapping tools like Google Maps.
I'm happy to answer any questions you have about either of these - just reply here. Best, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:22, 31 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for this information - I will implement these suggestions on new uploads, and I appreciate you correcting the categories on previous uploads. 4300streetcar (talk) 04:15, 1 August 2024 (UTC)
- Great, much appreciated. For coordinates, you should use {{Location}} for the camera location, or {{Object location}} for the location of the photo subject. You can also use both if you desire, especially if you were photographing something distant or at an unusual angle. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 19:12, 1 August 2024 (UTC)

Wonderful planespotting photographs!
[edit]Will note the coords next time I'm on the ground near Logan (I was near there some time ago, but I don't think security would take kindly to me beaching my sailboat on the shore, and Boston Harbor is rather windy). Cheers! JayCubby (talk) 03:16, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! It's been trickier with the cold weather and shorter days, but Logan has excellent variety and is great for planespotting. 4300streetcar (talk) 03:24, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
Autopatrol given
[edit]
Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. Abzeronow (talk) 20:19, 11 February 2025 (UTC)

Airliner pictures
[edit]Thanks for tidying those captions, clearly I was too tired when I was uploading and describing them. By the way, in experimenting with ISO, I've seen a noticeable jump in noise in the R5 between 320 and 400. Nothing that can't be coped with, but I was not expecting that, given how clean it is below 320 compared to my 5Ds. I'm have trouble with United graphics - that slogan at the front of the plane tends to be smeared if I am too aggressive with the post-processing, so for United I think I'll have to use a higher ISO and deal with the noise. Thankfully, the ex-Continental planes lack the slogan for the most part. Acroterion (talk) 12:00, 7 May 2025 (UTC)
- No worries. The Commons also seems a bit messy with ER-vs-non-ER distinctions. E.g. all 737-900ER-only operators have their categories named as 737-900, e.g. Category:Boeing 737-900 of Delta Air Lines, though there is a disorganized Category:Boeing 737-900ER that only includes individual registrations. But it felt worthwhile making the distinction in the captions/descriptions.
- Good to know about the ISO 320 vs 400 noise - I assumed 400 would have lower noise based on its Photos to Photos dynamic range chart, but guess not. I should test it on my Nikon Z8 as well (comparing ISO 400 vs 500) when I have the chance.
- Funnily enough I look at that exact United nose slogan ("Connecting people. Uniting the world.") to see which photos in a sequence are the sharpest and worth processing further and uploading. 4300streetcar (talk) 00:20, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- Also, the United Airlines fleet page gallery is still looking for some pics (namely an EvoBlue 777-200 non-ER against the sky, and a 737-900 non-ER in EvoBlue) if you happen to be able to get them from IAD or BWI. Your 787-8 pics were perfect for the gallery.
- (The 12 non-ER 737-900's don't seem to fly to very often IAD according to this [1], though there did seem to be an IAD flight on May 2nd [2])
- I'm also hunting around for an American A320 pic for the American Airlines fleet page gallery if you happen to have one, since the current pic is watermarked and excessively warm. Though 1-2 of those usually show up to BOS every day, so I may be able to catch one sooner or later. 4300streetcar (talk) 00:39, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- I judge how far a given image can be sharpened in post by finding the smallest plausibly-resolvable text and looking for the threshold at which it gets mangled, and then backing off (obviously looking for other artifacts or fringes too). United has that consistent 4" high lettering that is a challenge. Another indicator of oversharpening is the US flag - it goes wonky if you get carried away, but it's often on the far side of the exhaust stream and can be distorted anyway. At a minimum, I make sure the N number isn't fringey.
- I rarely get to IAD, it's a little out of the way for me. I have a project near BWI, so I go to the Thomas A. Dixon Jr. Aircraft Observation Area, a county park with lots of parking at the end of 15R/33L, and eat my lunch and decompress from the meetings. Obviously, BWI is 80% Southwest, so there's not a lot of variety, but it's convenient and almost ideal for photography.
- American seems only to fly 737s into BWI. My best chance of an American A320 would be Gravelly Point at DCA since American scarcely goes to IAD, but all I have that I like is a 319. I haven't been to DCA since last year.
- You can see my QI aircraft at Category:Quality images by Acroterion. Acroterion (talk) 01:26, 8 May 2025 (UTC)
- I had a site meeting today, and pulled into the lot to eat lunch, and there was an American A321 landing. Not a 320, alas, but so much for my assertion. File:American Airbus A321 N913US BWI MD1.jpg Acroterion (talk) 02:02, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Ah, very nice. I took a quick look on Flightradar24 and it looks like American flight 1495 (from Charlotte) is often an A320, though it was a 737-800 in the past.
- Looks like BOS actually gets several A320's a day from Charlotte as well, so once it stops raining in BOS I might be able to head out and get a photo of one as well. 4300streetcar (talk) 03:03, 9 May 2025 (UTC)
- Here's an American 320 at BWI: File:American Airbus A320 N126UW BWI MD1.jpg. Since it was landing on runway 28 it's a little higher than it would be from the vantage point at 33L, the usual runway. Acroterion (talk) 01:58, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks! I will leave the existing image in place for now since it's at a bit better of an angle.
- I also tried getting a photo of an American A320 at BOS, but wasn't able to get a good side-on angle.
- File:American Airbus A320 N108UW departing Boston May 2025.jpg 4300streetcar (talk) 03:41, 24 May 2025 (UTC)
- I agree, sooner or later we'll get one that's a good overall depiction. Acroterion (talk) 13:19, 24 May 2025 (UTC)

Photo requests
[edit]Some great shots in your recent uploads, especially Worcester Union Station and the train crossing Route 135. I see you have North Wilmington station on your to-do list; I'm finishing up expanding the article to submit for GA, so a new photo will be greatly appreciated. The next time you're around South Station, could I request a few photos of the bus terminal? I'm particularly interested in:
- Shots of P&B, C&J, Dartmouth Coach, and Boston Express buses (at the bus terminal or elsewhere), since we don't have any shots of these companies on Commons. There aren't a lot of great angles, but this one or this one might work.
- A shot of a bus inside the terminal, if it's possible to get one from public areas
- A wider daylit version of File:South Station bus terminal entrance on Atlantic Ave Jan 2025.jpg
Thanks, Pi.1415926535 (talk) 01:04, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks!
- I just uploaded the North Wilmington pics, which are in its category. Unfortunately it's a somewhat tricky station to show in context due to how long the footpath is, and is tricky to photograph from the west (where it can be lit by the sun) as there's little access on that side . Probably the best shot to show it in context File:North Wilmington station looking north July 2025 8.jpg, which was taken with a telephoto lens and unfortunately suffers from heat haze and limited depth-of-field as a result. There's images from several other angles in the category. File:North Wilmington station July 2025 4.jpg, File:Outbound train at North Wilmington station July 2025.jpg, and File:North Wilmington station looking south July 2025 7.jpg could also work well as infobox images. File:North Wilmington station July 2025 1.jpg shows how long the footpath is, but the platform itself is minuscule.
- I can spend some time at South Station Bus Terminal the next time I'm in the area and see what I get for those (I was actually passing through there yesterday, but was in a hurry so I couldn't get many photos; I've also been trying to get some newer shots of South Station Tower since the crane was removed but didn't get a good chance). I should have a chance the next couple weeks. I also might be able to camp out on an overpass overlooking various interstates and try to get some of the bus pics that way. 4300streetcar (talk) 05:49, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- I guess we're on the same wavelength - you took those photos before I even posted here! I'll probably use 5, 6, or the train for the infobox.
- Much appreciated about South Station, and no rush. I'm currently working on the article about the bus terminal, so I'll probably get more shots myself the next time I'm in Boston. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:45, 7 July 2025 (UTC)
- I got all of these, though the daylight shots were framed somewhat differently than the current article pic (it's actually tricky with the shadows in the afternoon/evening since the buildings across the street are fairly tall). 4300streetcar (talk) 20:20, 13 July 2025 (UTC)
- Amazing, thank you so much! Pi.1415926535 (talk) 22:13, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

Locomotives
[edit]Perhaps I should stick to airplanes! Acroterion (talk) 00:54, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
- No worries - looks like CSX used to own an EMD SD70MAC that was numbered #784, renumbered that SD70MAC to #4584 at some point before 2007, and then bought a new ES44AH in 2007 and numbered it #784. The first Google hit for "CSX 784" links to the SD70MAC, not the ES44AH. I usually Google the locomotive number to confirm the type too (unless it's a railroad I'm very familiar with), but unfortunately things like that can happen and it can be hard to spot. Still, definitely worth uploading train photos if you have them, and feel free to ask if you aren't sure of the type. 4300streetcar (talk) 01:08, 8 July 2025 (UTC)
Aircraft in clean configuration
[edit]Since there has been some discussion elsewhere about clean configuration vs flaps out, and since I've been able to get a fair number of passing planes at 1200mm before they configure for landing, I've started Category:Airliners in flight in clean configuration to begin to gather them into one place. Doubtless there are quite a few more. Category:Airliners in flight seems little-used and would need many daughter categories. Acroterion (talk) 18:57, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
- Excellent - thanks for the heads up! I'll add pics into the category if I come across any (I'm personally unlikely to take any clean configuration photos in the near future though) 4300streetcar (talk) 21:58, 14 July 2025 (UTC)
